In a last-minute deal to avoid a government shutdown, Congress set aside its partisan differences, at least for now, and agreed to temporarily fund the federal government. Under the terms of the unusual two-part agreement, the principal workplace regulatory agencies, such as the Department of Labor (DOL) and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), will be funded until February 2, 2024. Funding for other parts of the federal government will expire January 19, 2024. Spending levels are set at the same level and under the same conditions as in FY 2023. Although the agreement allows more time for lawmakers to enact the 12 annual appropriations bills needed to fund the government through the rest of FY 2024, there is still no obvious path to their passage before the new deadline occurs.
