The most recent national drug and alcohol use survey, which covers 2023, shows that illicit drug use was up among U.S. workers while alcohol use was down, compared with 2022. Findings from the latest National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), conducted annually by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), show an increase in the use of illicit drugs by full-time employees (FTEs) compared with the preceding year. By contrast, alcohol abuse by FTEs declined slightly during the same period.
The survey also breaks down respondents’ illicit drug use and alcohol abuse data based on demographic characteristics, such as gender, race/ethnicity, and education level.
