The number of workplace homicides dropped significantly in 2023 compared with 2022, while the number of suicides occurring in U.S. workplaces increased, according to the government’s most recent survey of workplace fatalities.

Overall, workplace homicides and suicides accounted for 14% of total fatal occupational injuries in 2023, down from 14.4% in 2022, according to data from the national Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) for calendar year 2023.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) conducts the CFOI each year. This annual survey, which was released December 19, 2024, is one measure for assessing the effectiveness of workplace violence prevention programs, although many variables can affect the yearly totals.

CWC prepared a chart that details workplace homicides and suicides over the past 20 years, both in actual numbers and as a percentage of total workplace fatalities.
