The U.S. Department of Labor and the Biden White House have published principles for AI developers and employers to follow regarding the use of artificial intelligence in the workplace. On May 16, 2024, DOL issued a guidance document entitled Artificial Intelligence and Worker Well-being: Principles and Best Practices for Developers and Employers, and the White House issued a Fact Sheet entitled Biden-Harris Administration Unveils Critical Steps to Protect Workers from Risks of Artificial Intelligence.
The documents encourage employers and AI developers to follow eight principles for AI use in the workplace. These principles are:
- Giving workers and their representatives genuine input into the development and use of AI systems
- Developing AI systems in a way that protects workers
- Establishing AI governance and human oversight
- Ensuring transparency about use of AI to workers and job applicants
- Protecting workers’ labor and employment rights
- Using AI to complement workers and improve job quality
- Upskilling workers during AI-related job transitions
- Ensuring responsible use of worker data
The guidance came in response to President Biden’s Executive Order 14110 directing federal agencies to develop policies for managing AI.
